UNP marks founder’s 115th birth anniversary with lecture on academic rights

In celebration of the 115th birth anniversary of Floro S. Crisologo, founder of the University of Northern Philippines, the university held a lecture series titled “Between Law and Lore: Advancing Academic Rights through Jurisprudence for Inclusive Higher Education” at the UNP Gymnasium.

This event honored Crisologo’s enduring legacy while underscoring the university’s steadfast commitment to academic freedom and legal awareness within higher education.

The program commenced with a Eucharistic Celebration, setting a reflective and solemn tone. This was followed by a formal program attended by faculty members, administrators, and other university stakeholders.

UNP President Dr. Erwin Cadorna delivered an inspiring message, highlighting the importance of legal awareness and compassionate leadership in academia. Pres. Cadorna remarked, “Through vision, conviction, and committed service, we strive to embody fairness and inclusivity, laying the groundwork for a just and humane society.”

Dr. Rolando Navarro, Vice President for Academic Affairs, warmly welcomed the participants. He emphasized the critical need to safeguard academic rights as a foundation for creating inclusive and empowering learning environments. Dr. Navarro eloquently stated, “Education should be accessible, equitable, and inclusive, reflecting the wisdom and unwavering commitment exemplified by our revered founder.”

The lecture series was led by Atty. Kent Alvin Guzman, DPA, Public Attorney II from the Public Attorney’s Office in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur. Atty. Guzman explored critical issues including academic freedom, educator responsibilities, promotion-related concerns, and legal challenges in administrative functions. He provided practical, rights-based guidance on academic governance, asserting that “Tradition or lore does not supersede the law.”

The program concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Remedios Navarro, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. She expressed gratitude to all participants and called for an ongoing dialogue on the protection of academic rights and the integration of mental health as vital components of inclusive education.
