The University of Northern Philippines (UNP), through the Guidance and Counseling Services (GCS) under the Student Welfare Services (SWSO) of the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS), conducted a meaningful mental health initiative titled Kumustahan: Nurturing Mental Wellness in Formation on September 4, 2025, at the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary (ICMS), Ayusan Sur, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. The activity that focused on suicide prevention awareness among seminarians reflects ICMS’s commitment to the holistic formation of seminarians, addressing intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and psychosocial needs to prepare them for their future vocation.
Recognizing the various challenges faced by seminarians, such as academic demands, family concerns, and personal struggles, the Kumustahan initiative provides a safe space for seminarians to openly discuss their mental health concerns and learn coping strategies. The program aims to develop psychological resilience, emotional maturity, and positive mental health habits while promoting supportive relationships within the seminary and beyond.
The learning session was led by Mrs. Rowena Mamuad, guidance counselor of UNP, and Dr. Rodel Rosario, the assistant head of GCS, who enriched the seminarians’ understanding of mental wellness. Furthermore, Dr. Marifel Acena, head of SWSO, facilitated an activity encouraging seminarians’ creativity and reflection in making a poster slogan themed “Achieving Better Tomorrows: Seeing the Signs and Offering Support,” focusing on awareness and proactive support for mental health.
This event is anchored in the enduring partnership between ICMS and UNP, whose shared mission strengthens community wellness initiatives among seminarians. The collaboration exemplifies a commitment to normalizing mental health conversations within formation programs and nurturing seminarians not only academically and spiritually but also emotionally, empowering them to thrive in their priestly formation with confidence and compassion.
