UNP leads Alzheimer’s Awareness Drive: Training and Medical Mission empower Sta. Cruz Community

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP), through the College of Nursing and University Extension Office (UEO), spearheaded a training workshop and medical mission on Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness, Prevention, and Care on September 18, 2025 in Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur. The training workshop forms part of the University’s CARE Program, particularly Project SALWAD SALUN-AT, which focuses on health education and disease prevention, and Project SAGUT AYAT, which aims to uplift the well-being of vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and underprivileged children.

Alzheimer’s disease continues to pose a pressing public health concern, impacting not only those diagnosed but also their families and caregivers. In support of the Department of Health’s Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Week, held every third week of September, the event aimed to heighten public awareness, combat stigma, and empower community members with essential knowledge and skills for prevention, early detection, and compassionate caregiving.

The day-long program combined informative lectures, hands-on learning, and meaningful community service. Prof. Richmond Audrey Cortez opened the sessions with a comprehensive discussion on Alzheimer’s disease, highlighting its definition, causes, risk factors, common misconceptions, and practical strategies for prevention and risk reduction. This was followed by an interactive skill-building session led by Prof. Christine Therese Tejada, who shared essential caregiving techniques, effective communication approaches, and memory-enhancing activities designed to support individuals living with the condition.

The medical mission provided free admission assessments and medication dispensing. Beyond treatment, the initiative also delivered health education sessions, effectively linking medical care with preventive awareness to empower communities toward better health practices.

The initiative was organized in response to the request of Hon. Teresita Valle, Municipal Mayor of Sta. Cruz, and the UEO Coordinator for Community and Social Services.

This collaborative endeavor supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By uniting education, service, and community action, UNP reaffirmed its commitment to holistic health care, empowering caregivers, and enhancing the quality of life for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
