UNP Holds Lecture on Empowering Girls, Tackling Early Marriage and Teenage Pregnancy

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP), through the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension and the College of Health Sciences (CHS), spearheaded an activity dubbed as “Seminar on Empowering Girls: Combating Early Marriage and Pregnancy cum Health and Gender Advocacy” on September 26, 2025, at Solotsolot National High School.

The initiative attended by students and teachers aimed to raise awareness, educate stakeholders, and provide adolescent girls and their communities with knowledge and tools to challenge harmful cultural norms and advance gender equality. By creating a safe space for dialogue, the seminar sought to encourage young women to pursue education, make informed choices about their bodies, and assert their rights.

Students and teachers actively participated in interactive discussions and expert lectures that emphasized reproductive health, legal rights, access to health services, and empowerment through education and leadership. The seminar also highlighted the role of schools and communities in reducing the prevalence of early marriages and teenage pregnancies.

The seminar featured distinguished resource speakers who shared their expertise on critical issues affecting adolescent girls. Dr. Romelia Tamayo delivered an in-depth discussion on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, emphasizing the importance of empowering young women with accurate knowledge to make informed decisions about their well-being. Complementing this, Prof. Teodora Soliven addressed the pressing concerns of early marriage and teenage pregnancy, shedding light on their long-term social, health, and economic implications for both the individual and the community.

Adding another significant dimension to the discourse, Mr. Johnny Allagadan Jr. of the UNP Public Information Office conducted a lecture on Safe Spaces, highlighting the need to foster inclusive and supportive environments where the rights and dignity of young women are safeguarded. His talk underscored the role of communities and institutions in ensuring that girls grow up free from harassment, discrimination, and violence.

The activity was led by Dr. Fatima Rocamora, UNP Vice President for Research and Extension, together with Prof. May Evelia Ruadap, Extension Coordinator. They were joined by CHS faculty members Dr. Gerald Caezar de Peralta and Prof. Lowie Lynette Basconcillo, who lent their support in facilitating the program.

The seminar reaffirmed UNP’s continuing commitment to promoting inclusive education, gender equality, and community empowerment, particularly in shaping a future where adolescent girls can thrive free from early marriage and teenage pregnancy.
