UNP sparks Physics engagement at Imelda NHS

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP), through the BS Physics Program of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the University Extension Office (UEO), held “Strengthening Physics Engagement through Physics Demonstrations, Physics Olympics, and Needs Assessment” at Imelda National High School, Nanguneg, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur on September 29, 2025.

Designed as a school-based STEM engagement, the activity aimed to deliver practical Physics instruction via demonstrations and team-based competitions, and to conduct a needs-assessment survey among stakeholders. Feedback gathered will guide future targeted laboratory support, teacher training, and mentorship, thereby ensuring effective UNP–Imelda NHS collaboration.

Leading the initiative were Dr. Dean Alvin Pablico, BS Physics Program Head, and Dr. Lloyd Mata, Director of the University Extension Office. They were joined by Physics faculty members Dr. Mariquit Obrero, Prof. Redentor Rojas, Prof. Jerome Mecca, and Prof. Randolf Agup, along with 15 BS Physics students who served as facilitators. Participants included Imelda NHS junior and senior high students and faculty, led by Officer-in-Charge Jerie-Lyn Conchita Masangkay.

The Physics Demonstrations segment brought modern applications to the classroom. It featured a lecture on the basics of microprocessor-based instrumentation, showing participants how small computers are integrated into experiments for precise data collection, and two mechatronic project demonstrations, which showcased the exciting integration of electronics, programming, and mechanical measurement in experimental setups.

Competition soared during the Physics Olympics, which comprised the Egg Drop, Paper Tower, Bridge Building, Large Barge, Paper Airplane, and Supermagnet challenges. These events specifically emphasized fundamental concepts of mechanics and materials while actively promoting creativity, teamwork, and applied learning among the students.

To lay the groundwork for a responsive and long-term partnership, organizers administered a comprehensive needs assessment survey among Imelda NHS stakeholders. The actionable findings from this survey will directly shape the work plan for a sustained collaboration between UNP, through CAS and UEO, and Imelda NHS.

The undertaking powerfully underscores UNP’s steadfast commitment to strengthening regional science learning pathways, fostering an innovation culture, and deepening mutually beneficial inter-institutional collaboration.
