Faculty members of the BS Psychology program of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) participated in the 61st Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) Convention and the 8th ASEAN Regional Union of Psychological Societies (ARUPS) Hybrid International Conference, held on September 25–27, 2025, in Cebu and virtually.
The three-day gathering brought together psychology professionals, researchers, and educators from across the country and the ASEAN region to share knowledge, research findings, and innovative practices. This year’s convention highlighted psychology’s pivotal role in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as mental health, education, community well-being, and inclusive growth.
UNP was represented by Dr. Remedios Navarro, Mr. Mico Molina, Dr. Marifel Acena, and Ms. Alexandria Blake Real-Pisalbo, who engaged in discussions that underscored psychology’s contributions to addressing global challenges. Their participation not only strengthened professional networks but also reflected the University’s continuing commitment to academic excellence, research collaboration, and community service at both national and international levels.
As part of the convention, Real-Pisalbo served as a speaker in one of the parallel sessions designed to showcase expert-led facilitation on emerging practices in psychology. She shared her expertise on nature-based therapy, a field that integrates the healing power of natural environments into psychological care. In her talk, she emphasized the restorative value of immersing individuals in green spaces such as mountains, forests, and gardens, highlighting how these environments can reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and foster overall well-being. Her presentation resonated strongly with participants, as ecotherapy is gaining international attention as an innovative, sustainable approach to mental health.
Recognized as one of the pioneer psychologists advocating ecotherapy in the Philippines, Real-Pisalbo brought unique insights into how this practice can be localized and adapted to Filipino culture and contexts. By sharing her expertise, she not only advanced awareness of ecotherapy but also positioned the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) as a contributor to global conversations on alternative therapeutic interventions.
In addition to her role as a speaker, Real-Pisalbo represented UNP at the PAP-ARUPS meeting with UNILAB Education on September 26, 2025. The dialogue centered on exploring possible partnerships that would benefit psychology students and professionals, particularly in areas of internship opportunities, microcredentialing programs, and institutional certifications. Such collaborations aim to strengthen professional development pathways, ensuring that graduates are equipped with both traditional competencies and modern skills demanded by the evolving field of psychology.
Overall, the convention underscored the importance of regional and international collaboration in addressing pressing issues in mental health. By learning from diverse cultural practices across ASEAN and beyond, psychologists can collectively design innovative solutions that respond not only to individual needs but also to broader social challenges in a rapidly changing world.
