The University of Northern Philippines (UNP), in partnership with JCI Vigan, launched a pioneering wellness initiative for first-year students through the Academic Competence and Empowerment (ACE) Program titled “Grounded for Greatness: Yoga to Unlock Academic Potential” on September 29, 2025 at the UNP Gymnasium.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Student Welfare Services Office (SWSO) and the Guidance and Counseling Services Office (GCS) under the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS), was designed to support first-year students in navigating the academic transition. Aimed at easing mental, emotional, and academic pressures, the program sought to build resilience, enhance stress management capabilities, and cultivate a holistic mindset toward academic success through purposeful wellness practices.
Unlike conventional orientations typically centered on lectures, the event took a refreshing approach by incorporating yoga as a tool for learning and self-empowerment. Guided by JCI Trainer Ms. Joana Cara Medina, participants engaged in breathing exercises, mindfulness activities, and reflective movements designed to enhance focus and emotional balance. Gracing the event was Hon. Janina Carine Medina-Fariñas, JCI Vigan President and Vigan City Councilor, who expressed her appreciation for the enduring partnership with UNP in advancing the holistic development of students and the wider community.
Structured in two main sessions catering to different college clusters, the day’s program featured engaging yoga activities designed to ease stress and enhance concentration among participants. The collaboration between UNP and JCI Vigan underscored a strong sense of community and shared purpose, highlighting their joint commitment to nurturing student well-being and empowering UNPians to unlock their full academic potential throughout their college journey.
