UNP accelerates Green Campus initiative with e-bike rollout for sustainable mobility

The University of Northern Philippines took a significant step toward sustainable mobility on January 19, 2026, with the distribution of electric bikes (e-bikes) to its academic units. This initiative, funded through the University’s savings, emphasizes UNP’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and its active participation in the UI GreenMetric sustainability framework. The e-bikes were officially handed over following the flag-raising ceremony, reinforcing the University’s push for greener, more eco-friendly practices on campus.

Under the visionary leadership of President Dr. Erwin Cadorna, UNP launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed to promote sustainable and eco-friendly transportation in the campus. The program, which highlights the University’s commitment to environmental responsibility, was supported by key members of the administration, including Dr. Rolando Navarro, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mr. Albert Tejero, Vice President for Finance and Administration, and Dr. Fatima Rocamora, VP for Research and Extension.

Dr. Cadorna highlighted that the introduction of e-bikes aligns with the University of Northern Philippines’ commitment to environmental sustainability and its vision of becoming a greener campus. “I am also looking forward to the day when our University harnesses solar power to reduce energy consumption,” he added, underscoring UNP’s ongoing efforts to adopt innovative and eco-friendly solutions in its operations.

The initiative provides students and staff with convenient, low-emission alternatives to traditional modes of transport. Beyond enhancing mobility on campus, the program reflects UNP’s broader mission to encourage environmentally conscious practices among its community, reduce its overall carbon footprint, and serve as a model for sustainable development initiatives in the region.

By integrating innovation with environmental stewardship, UNP continues to demonstrate leadership in fostering greener, more sustainable lifestyles, reinforcing the university’s role not only as an academic institution but also as a proactive advocate for climate-conscious practices.
