Pride and triumph reverberated in the University of Northern Philippines Gymnasium as Cluster I graduates formally opened the week-long 61st Commencement Exercises on May 11, 2026 marking the beginning of a milestone celebration honoring academic excellence, perseverance, and achievement.
In a stirring display of academic triumph and pride, the 896 degree and certificate recipients of Cluster I marched in solemn procession symbolizing the culmination of years of perseverance, sacrifice, and dedication to the health professions. The College of Nursing (CN) produced 195 graduates from the Master of Arts in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs, while the College of Health Sciences (CHS) contributed 701 graduates from its diverse roster of programs including Bachelor of Science in Midwifery, Bachelor of Science in Emergency Health Services, Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science, Certificate in Emergency Medical Technician, Diploma in Midwifery, Certificate in Emergency Medical Responder, Certificate in Midwifery, and Certificate in Health Aid.
Completing the grand academic march were the faculty and staff of CN and CHS, along with the cluster’s commencement speaker, Dr. Erlinda Palaganas, and university officials led by UNP President Dr. Erwin Cadorna, whose presence emphasized the significance of the occasion.
The candidates for graduation were formally presented by CN Dean Dr. Francis Don Nero and CHS Dean Dr. Joussie Bermio before being endorsed for conferment by Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Rolando Navarro. In a defining moment of the ceremony, University President Dr. Cadorna officially conferred the graduates’ respective degrees, marking the culmination of years of rigorous academic training and unwavering dedication in the health and medical disciplines.
In her keynote address, Dr. Palaganas delivered a stirring message that resonated deeply with the graduating class, urging them to stay anchored in purpose amid the rapidly changing demands of the modern world. “In a world that is constantly moving, may you remain grounded… Your profession is more than just a career, it is a commitment,” she said, emphasizing that entering the health and medical profession entails far more than professional achievement—it calls for compassion, integrity, and a lifelong dedication to service. Her words emphasized the profound and transformative role that healthcare professionals play in safeguarding lives and advancing the well-being of communities.
Following the awarding of honors and the conferral of diplomas, Jonel Ponce, Magna Cum Laude graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Midwifery and Cluster I valedictorian, delivered an inspiring valedictory address that resonated deeply with fellow graduates. Reflecting on the challenges and sacrifices that marked their academic journey, he highlighted the power of perseverance, declaring that “it is possible to keep going even if you feel like giving up” — a stirring reminder of the resilience and determination that carried the graduating class through adversity toward success.
After Ponce’s speech, Dianne Tolentino, Magna Cum Laude from Bachelor of Science in Nursing, led her fellow graduates to the pledge of loyalty, then followed by Hon. Nestor Pajaro, President of UNP Federated Alumni Association, who led the oath welcoming the graduates into the UNP alumni community.
The program concluded with the recessional and exit of colors, signifying the end of this momentous occasion.
