The University of Northern Philippines, through its Environmental Management Office (EMO), brought together student leaders from the University Student Council and college-mandated student organizations for a strategic consultation meeting on September 9, 2026, at the Old Registrar’s Function Hall.
The consultation provided a vital avenue for strengthening coordination between the Environmental Management Office and student organizations while ensuring that student voices are meaningfully integrated into the University’s environmental agenda. Through the exchange of ideas, concerns, and recommendations, the participants laid the foundation for stronger collaboration and collective action, positioning student leaders as active partners in advancing sustainability initiatives and promoting a lasting culture of environmental responsibility throughout the University.
Ms. Anna Liza V. Europa-Morales, Head of EMO, reaffirmed UNP’s commitment to protect the environment, promote sustainability, and ensure responsible management of its campus. She emphasized that achieving these goals requires the active participation of the entire academic community, particularly students, whose involvement is essential in turning environmental policies and programs into meaningful actions. She also stressed the importance of sustaining the University’s environmental efforts as part of its participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, which recognizes higher education institutions for their commitment to campus sustainability and environmental management.
The University’s environmental agenda is anchored on the principle that sustainability is a shared responsibility. Ms. Europa-Morales stressed that creating and maintaining a greener campus requires the active involvement of students, faculty, staff, and other members of the UNP community. In support of this goal, the Environmental Management Office continues to work closely with student organizations in promoting environmental awareness and implementing key campus policies, including the Ban on Single-Use Plastics, Water Conservation Policy, Solid Waste Management Policy, No Smoking Policy, Clean As You Go (CLAYGO), and energy-efficiency measures. These initiatives encourage the University community to make responsible environmental practices part of their daily activities and contribute to building a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable campus.
Taking the lead in representing the student sector was Ms. Rachelle Anne Imperial, President of the Student Council and a member of the UNP Board of Regents. Her participation emphasized the important role of student leadership in shaping and advancing the University’s environmental agenda. As a student representative in the University’s highest governing body, Ms. Imperial provided a vital link between student organizations and institutional decision-making, strengthening opportunities for students to contribute meaningfully to sustainability planning and environmental initiatives.
The Student Council likewise reaffirmed its strong support for the University’s environmental agenda, with Ms. Imperial conveying the student sector’s commitment to advance a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable campus. Her affirmation highlighted the important role of student leaders in mobilizing their peers and turning environmental commitments into concrete actions.
The consultation also paved the way for the planning and preparation of activities for the upcoming Environmental Month Celebration. The EMO, together with student leaders and representatives from various colleges, explored programs and initiatives designed to encourage wider student participation, strengthen environmental awareness, and make sustainability a more visible part of campus life.
More importantly, the meeting strengthened the partnership between the EMO and student organizations, establishing a stronger foundation for coordinated environmental programs, advocacy campaigns, and sustainability initiatives. Through this collaborative approach, UNP continues to empower its students as active partners in achieving its vision of a cleaner, greener, and more environmentally responsible University.
