The University of Northern Philippines, through the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension, conducted a journalism and skills training at Nagsincaoan Elementary School on September 9, 2026 in response to the school’s request for capacity-building activities.
The engagement brought together teachers, parents, and student writers through two training components: banana bread making and journalism.
The banana bread-making session was attended by teachers led by School Principal Ms. Rosemelinda Baclig and parents. It was facilitated by Prof. Jenina Batin, a faculty member of the College of Teacher Education.
The hands-on training equipped participants with practical skills in preparing banana bread while introducing a potential livelihood opportunity. It also highlighted the value of developing simple, practical skills that can be applied at home or potentially transformed into small-scale income-generating activities.
Meanwhile, the journalism lecture was conducted for the writers of the Nagsincaoan Elementary School paper and facilitated by Mr. Johnny Allagadan Jr. of the University Information Office.
The session aimed to strengthen the young writers’ basic journalism skills and deepen their appreciation of responsible campus journalism. It encouraged the students to develop their abilities in writing and communicating information while recognizing their role in documenting school activities and sharing meaningful stories about their community.
Facilitating the activities were Prof. May Evelia Ruadap, University Extension Office (UEO) Coordinator for Livelihood and Training Services, and Prof. Randall Rabacal, UEO Coordinator for Advocacy and Research Dissemination.
The activity was coordinated by Dr. Fatima Rocamora, Vice President for Research and Extension, as part of the University’s continuing efforts to provide extension services that respond to the needs of its partner communities.
