COMMENCEMENT 2024

A Story of Perseverance and Gratitude

[Third in a series: Valedictory addresses from the different colleges of the University of Northern Philippines are here featured as excellent graduates reflect on the journey behind them and as they forward to the next.]

Dhyna Tabin, a 22-year-old civil engineering graduate, has proven that with hard work, determination, and a little help from those around her, anything is possible. In her valedictory address, Tabin shares her inspiring journey to the top, offering a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs that have shaped her academic success.

Tabin’s path to becoming the valedictorian of her class was not without its obstacles. Despite initially resisting her father’s wish for her to pursue engineering, Tabin ultimately found her calling in the field, thanks in part to the guidance of her adviser, Sir Jonathan Cacabelos.  Tabin’s decision to take on the BS Civil Engineering program was further solidified by her DOST-SEI scholarship, which allowed her to focus on her studies without the added financial burden.

Throughout her academic journey, Tabin faced her fair share of challenges, including tough subjects and a grading system that she describes as “really tough.”  However, she remained determined, even praying for a passing grade in one particularly difficult course, Dynamics of Rigid Bodies. Tabin’s perseverance paid off when she was given a 2.5 grade, a testament to her hard work and the support of her professors.

Tabin’s success, however, was not solely the result of her individual efforts. She readily acknowledges the crucial role played by the people around her, from her close friends who provided emotional support to the professors who went above and beyond to help her succeed.  Tabin’s heartfelt gratitude towards these individuals is a testament to her humility and the value she places on community.

One person who played a particularly significant role in Tabin’s journey was her friend Myriam, who was there to “catch [her] every time [she] fell” during the demanding final months of her engineering program.  Tabin also expresses her appreciation for the members of her A6 group, as well as her professor, Sir Karl, who has been a constant source of encouragement and pride.

Tabin’s valedictory address is a powerful reminder that success is not achieved in isolation. By acknowledging the contributions of those around her, Tabin sets an example of the importance of community and support in the pursuit of one’s goals.

As Tabin looks towards the future, she encourages her fellow graduates to celebrate their own achievements, no matter how big or small.  Her message is one of empowerment and self-belief, urging her peers to recognize their own worth and the value of their hard work.

Dhyna Tabin’s journey to the top of her class is a testament to the power of perseverance, gratitude, and the support of a strong community. Her story serves as an inspiration to all who strive for excellence, reminding us that with dedication and the right people by our side, we can achieve our dreams.
