Arki’s coastal clean-up advances community outreach goals
As part of the University of Northern Philippines’ 59th founding anniversary celebration, the College of Architecture successfully led a coastal clean-up at Tamorong Beach, Santa Catalina, Ilocos Sur, on October 17, 2024.
The event, held under the UNP Community Outreach Program, was spearheaded by Dean Fatima Nicetas Rabang Alonzo, Assistant Dean Monserrat Stevens Pescador, College Extension Coordinator Maila P. Ragasa, Architecture Program Head Mon-crest A. Toje, and Environmental Planning Program Head Ludivina Lozano.
The initiative was supported by the faculty members, along with student leaders from the College of Architecture-Atelier Council (CAAC), the Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners Student Auxiliary (PIEPSA-UNP Chapter), the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary (UAPSA-UNP Chapter), and the college publication The Façade. Community representatives from Santa Catalina also took part, further enhancing the collaborative spirit of the event.
The clean-up initiative addressed marine pollution, focusing on plastics and harmful debris that threaten ecosystems. Beyond preserving coastal biodiversity, it promoted environmental awareness and responsible waste management.
The event’s success was reflected not only in the physical clean-up but also in upholding community collaboration and shared responsibility for the environment. The College of Architecture’s leadership emphasized sustainability, while student and faculty involvement highlighted the role of the University in driving positive change.
This effort contributes to climate action by protecting marine ecosystems and preserving coastal areas, reinforcing the College’s commitment to sustainability and environmental advocacy for future generations.
