In line with the celebration of Fire Prevention Month 2025, the Open University, in collaboration with the local government unit (LGU) of Sto. Domingo and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), successfully conducted the Barangay Fire Drill Olympics on March 28, 2025. This initiative aligns with the provisions of the memorandum of agreement between UNP and LGU Sto. Domingo which aimed to enhance disaster preparedness and fire safety awareness in the community.
The Barangay Fire Drill Olympics brought together various barangay teams to participate in fire safety challenges and emergency response drills, testing their skills in fire suppression. Among the events held were the Bucket Relay, Blitz Attack/ Busted Hose Replacement, Flammable Liquid Fire Extinguishment, and Tug of War – each designed to test speed, coordination, technical knowledge and teamwork under pressure. These activities provided an opportunity for local responders and volunteers to demonstrate their readiness and effectiveness in handling fire-related emergencies, fostering a culture of resilience and preparedness.
Sto. Domingo Mayor Bryan Dexter Tadena commended the event, highlighting the importance of community-based training in mitigating fire hazards and reducing risks. “This initiative not only equips our barangay responders with essential skills but also strengthens our collective commitment to ensuring a safer and more disaster-resilient Sto. Domingo,” the mayor said.
BFP Sto. Domingo representatives facilitated the drills, providing technical guidance and real-time assessments of the participants’ performance. FSINSP Heinrich Gudoy, Municipal Fire Marshal, emphasized the significance of hands-on training in fire prevention, stating, “Preparedness is key to saving lives and properties. Through this Fire Drill Olympics, we empower our communities to act swiftly and effectively during fire incidents.”
The Open University played a crucial role in the planning and execution of the event, underscoring its commitment to community engagement and capacity-building initiatives. Dr. Wilson Tolio, Asst. Dean and representative of the Open University to the activity, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their participation and support. “By working together, we can create safer communities and instill a proactive approach to disaster resilience,” Dr. Tolio said.
The event concluded with an awarding ceremony, recognizing the outstanding performance of participating barangay teams. The Barangay Fire Drill Olympics 2025 successfully strengthened the partnership between the Open University, LGU Sto. Domingo, and BFP, reaffirming their dedication to public safety and emergency preparedness.
