CAS-DMNS launched ChristMATH Tutorial through Pinoy Games at Daclapan

On December 12, 2024, the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (CAS – DMNS) launched the “ChristMATH Tutorial through Pinoy Games” at Daclapan Elementary School (DES) in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur.

This initiative, part of the flagship program “Mathtuto ka sa Natural na Siyensiya,” aimed to enhance the arithmetic skills of struggling pupils from Grades 1-6 while fostering a love for mathematics.

The event was organized by Dr. Restituto Llagas Jr., DMNS officer-in-charge, alongside a dedicated team including Dr. Tirso Tactay, Mr. Mhark Jay Benitez, Dr. Mary Loreen Cayabyab, and Mrs. Helen Siembre. Their collective efforts focused on addressing the educational needs of DES students by integrating innovative arithmetic techniques with traditional Filipino games.

The tutorial sessions emphasized practical arithmetic shortcuts and tricks, making learning both effective and enjoyable. Notable activities included: daMAth, a game designed to reinforce mathematical concepts; a-MATH-zing Race, which involved various puzzles, bingo, and sipa (a traditional Filipino game), all aimed at making math engaging; Math relays, competitive activities that encouraged teamwork and collaboration among students.

Pupils participated enthusiastically, developing not only their math skills but also essential social skills through teamwork. The combination of learning and fun created an ideal educational environment, showcasing the potential for culturally relevant and interactive learning methods.

As a token of appreciation for their participation, students received gifts to support their schooling. Mr. Gilbert Asuncion, the Head Teacher of DES, expressed gratitude to DMNS for providing such valuable opportunities for students to learn and enjoy mathematics.

This event not only addressed immediate educational needs but also paved the way for future math tutorials that can continue to engage and inspire young learners in their mathematical journey.
