Chan tops DevTalk2026 English Category

Sophia O. Chan, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Financial Management student and the incumbent Associate Editor of BizNews, brought home the championship title in the Development Talk 2026 Finals Round (English Category), held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on March 28. The event was organized by the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (CARD-MRI).

Chan, with her piece entitled “Equalizing Dreams: A Promise Still in Progress” anchored on the event’s theme “Education as the Great Equalizer,” explores the importance of education as a tool in the fight against poverty.

In an interview, Chan shared, “I rehearsed after classes with Sir Emman, between group projects, and on my own during spare moments throughout my day. I’d recite my speech in the morning and before sleeping, often practicing in front of my stuffed toys or a wall, sometimes even directing it to my great grandmother who’s probably watching me since I dedicated my speech to her,” when asked about her preparations.

She shared that one of the major challenges she faced was battling the flu, which nearly caused her to lose her voice. To manage this, she had to take medication, drink warm beverages, and observe vocal rest. Despite this, she felt accomplished and fulfilled with her performance on stage.

She also added, “Public speaking will always be close to my heart. I want to continue using it to reach young people. My piece emphasized that education is not yet the great equalizer, especially when poverty remains a barrier. But it has the potential to be, if we push for systemic change and better leadership. As a student journalist, I advocate through my writing. And if my pen rests, there will always be a microphone to carry the message forward.” when asked how she would continue to advocate for her piece beyond the competition.

The three winners, including Chan, emerged from the first phase of the competition—Qualifying Round held on November 15, 2025. The event concluded with an awarding ceremony and a photo opportunity. This victory is a testament of the university’s commitment to producing excellent students.

Chan is under the guidance and mentorship of Mr. Emman Trevor A. Quilala, CBAA Faculty and Incumbent BizNews Adviser.
