In a meaningful collaboration between the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension (OVPRE) of the University of Northern Philippines, and the BA Political Science program of the College of Arts and Sciences, an extension activity on Human Rights with Emphasis on Senior Citizens’ Rights was successfully conducted on August 27, 2025 in Manueva, Santa, Ilocos Sur.
The event brought together experts, advocates, and community members in an engaging orientation that underscored the importance of recognizing, protecting, and upholding the rights of senior citizens.
The activity featured insightful discussions from distinguished speakers: Mr. Danilo Balino of the Commission on Human Rights, Ms. Crizzle Paz, Mr. Ismael Rivera, and Ms. Mae Angelie Garcia from the BA Political Science program. Their expertise shed light on both the legal frameworks and the social responsibilities that communities must embrace in advancing the welfare of older persons. The session was facilitated with clarity and inclusivity by Ms. Ciela Marie Pacopia, ensuring that the participants actively engaged in meaningful conversations.
This extension activity was made possible through the dedication of the OVPRE, under the leadership of Dr. Fatima Rocamora, Vice President for Research and Extension. By extending the university’s academic and social responsibility beyond campus walls, the program demonstrated UNP’s unwavering commitment to service, empowerment, and community partnership.
More than just an orientation, the activity served as a call to action, urging every participant to become advocates of human rights in their own families and communities. By equipping local stakeholders with knowledge and awareness, UNP and its partners reaffirmed that the fight for human rights is not confined to classrooms or offices but lived out in daily acts of care and respect, especially toward those who have paved the way for future generations.
Barangay Manueva, Santa, as the recipient community, is headed by Punong Barangay Dr. Manuel Bajet Jr. With Dr. Bajet during the activity were members of the Barangay Council.
As the country continues to navigate the complexities of an aging population, this initiative highlighted the role of education and awareness in ensuring that the elderly are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. The success of this initiative marks another milestone in the University’s continuous effort to bridge academic expertise and community needs. It is a powerful reminder that the protection of human rights, most especially of vulnerable sectors such as senior citizens, is both a shared duty and a lasting legacy.
