CHS prepares Diploma in Midwifery graduates for April 2025 licensure examination

The College of Health Sciences of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) continues its proactive efforts to ensure the readiness of its Diploma in Midwifery graduates for the upcoming Midwifery licensure examination in April 2025. As part of these initiatives, the Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program led by Prof. Lowie Lynette Basconcillo, Program Head, Prof. Geraldine Palomares, RLE Coordinator, and Prof. Rita Soliven, faculty member, conducted a comprehensive Mock Board Examination on January 24, 2025 at the UNP Auditorium.

The Mock Board Exam covered the five key areas of the licensure examination: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Fundamentals of Health Care, Infant Care and Feeding, Professional Growth and Development, and Primary Health Care. These core topics align with the competencies required for licensed midwifery practice and reflect the professional standards of the field.

By simulating the conditions of the actual licensure examination, the activity aimed to assess the students’ preparedness and pinpoint areas requiring additional academic support. Faculty members involved in the initiative emphasized the importance of this diagnostic tool, noting that it not only measures students’ knowledge but also highlights opportunities to strengthen their skills in alignment with the demands of midwifery practice.

This initiative holds significant academic and professional relevance. By simulating the conditions of the actual licensure examination, the Mock Board Exams serve as a critical tool for both formative and summative assessment. This provide a platform for students to gauge their level of preparedness and identify specific areas that require further academic and practical reinforcement. Additionally, the activity enables faculty members, led by Prof. Basconcillo to gather insights into the students’ strengths and areas for improvement, allowing for the development of targeted interventions and support mechanisms to enhance learning outcomes.

Dr. Joussa Bermio, CHS Dean, said that “the activity is more than just a preparatory exercise; it serves as a key assessment tool for both the students and faculty. It provides valuable insights into the students’ strengths and challenges, enabling us to develop targeted interventions to support their success.”

Beyond preparation for the licensure examination, the initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #4, which promotes quality education. By equipping future midwives with the necessary competencies to pass the licensure examination, the College also contributes to the broader objective of improving maternal and child health outcomes through the development of skilled healthcare professionals.

The College of Health Sciences remains steadfast in its mission to produce globally competitive and compassionate healthcare professionals. With initiatives like the Mock Board Examination, the College not only reinforces its dedication to academic excellence but also supports its graduates in achieving success in their future roles within the healthcare system.
