UNP CHTM celebrates its10th founding anniversary

The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CHTM) at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) recently celebrated its 10th founding anniversary, which took place from April 15 to 18, 2024. The event, themed “A Decade of Unity and Excellence,” highlighted the institution’s history and contributions to hospitality and tourism.

The CHTM Foundation Day, which is commemorated annually in collaboration with the mandated and accredited organizations within the College, is a historic event that highlights the institution’s accomplishments and progress. This year’s events featured a variety of engaging activities designed to foster camaraderie, skill development, and community engagement.

The celebration began with a unity dance performed by CHTM students at the flagpole, following the flag-raising ceremony. This was followed by a solemn mass held at the University Ecumenical Center, setting the tone for the commemoration of a decade of excellence in hospitality and tourism education.

A highlight of the celebration was seminar on Gender and Development titled “CHTM Breaking Barriers: A Gender and Development Seminar for Inclusivity and Empowerment.” John Ray P. Supnet served as the resource speaker. The event provided an opportunity for insightful discussions and reflections on significant issues concerning gender equality and empowerment in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

In the afternoon, Mx. CHTM 2024 was held where students showcased their personality and authenticity regardless of their Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression (SOGIE).

The celebration continued with skills competitions focusing on hospitality and tourism, which were organized by the two accredited organizations in the College, the Hospitality Management Students Organization (HMSO) and Tourism Students Organization (TSO). These competitions not only displayed the students’ skills and knowledge but also provided necessary actual hands-on experience that will be beneficial in their future careers. The day concluded with an awards ceremony at the CHTM grounds.

On the last two days, the mandated organization, the Society of Hospitality and Tourism Students, organized a Leadership Camp with the theme “Leading Beyond Limits” at Brgy. Cacadiran, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur.

Mr. Mark Christian Arizala, a faculty member of the College of Health Sciences, served as a resource speaker on the topic “Basic Life Support Training,” followed by Mr. Jhunel F. Tanurio, the UNP-SC president, who shared his leadership experiences.

This activity brought together student leaders from across CHTM, giving them the opportunity to enhance their leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Student participants gained essential insights and made lasting connections with other students through team-building activities, preparing them to become future leaders in the hospitality and tourism industry.

CHTM’s 10th Founding Anniversary celebration was not only a significant occasion to recognize its rich history, but also a testament to the institution’s continuous commitment to excellence, innovation, and comprehensive student development.

As CHTM continues to set new standards for hospitality and tourism education, it stays committed to empowering and inspiring the next generation of industry professionals.
