DLH stresses women and the environment in a training
The Department of Languages and Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences through its DLH SSS (Saluad, Saririt ken Saranay) Extension Program successfully conducted a Training on Women and the Environment Towards Sustainable Community in commemoration of the 18-Day Campaign to End VAW in Capangdanan Elementary School and Quimmarayan Elementary School.
The extension activity is not just a matter of addressing gender inequality; it is a critical strategy for fostering long-term, sustainable development. Empowered women contribute to more resilient, environmentally conscious, and economically stable communities, driving change toward a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
Prof. Bernadeth F. Canoy, the organizer and initiator of the activity, conveyed the rationale for the activity. She specified that the training revolves around empowering women to play an active role in addressing environmental issues and promoting sustainability.
In the activity, Dr. Christy Venezuela, CAS faculty member, emphasized women’s critical role in environmental management, gender equality and social inclusion, and building capacity for sustainable livelihoods.
In addition, she emphasized that recognizing women’s roles environmental sustainability directly contributes to the achievement of several United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs).
These include empowering women to be leaders in environmental management and policy, helping women contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, promoting sustainable land management practices, and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices to improve food security.
On the other hand, Mr. Stephen C. Tabios, faculty member of DSSP, discussed RA 11313 (The Safe Spaces Act). He stressed that the law is essential for promoting a culture of respect, equality, and safety in communities.
By informing and empowering individuals, raising awareness of the law, and ensuring that enforcement mechanisms are accessible, these activities play a crucial role in creating a safer and more just society for all. They also contribute to broader goals of gender equality, human rights, and social inclusion.
The training was concluded by Prof. Ma. Ines B. Pastor, noting that the training is a transformative initiative for building sustainable communities.
The activity was initiated and organized by Prof. Bernadeth F. Canoy and led by Prof. Allen Magdaleno De Vera, the department head.
