DMMMSU Dominates PCSMT Biology Quiz

The University of Northern Philippines in collaboration with The Philippine Consortium for Science, Mathematics, and Technology, Inc., hosted the highly anticipated 2025 Biology Quiz Bowl as part of the Math-Science Quiz Bowl and Turnover Ceremony from April 2-4, 2025. The event held at the UNP Gymnasium, gathering aspiring biologists and educators from different institutions under the theme, Innovation in Action: Shaping Tomorrow with Science, Mathematics, and Technology.

The Biology Quiz Bowl took place on April 3, 2025, featured a series of challenging rounds: easy, average, and difficult rounds that assessed participants’ knowledge in the field of biology. The competition was fierce, with teams displaying their expertise and passion for the life sciences in a battle of wits and intellect.

The team from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMSU) emerged as the champions of the biology category, securing the title with an impressive score of 32 points. Hot on their heels, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) claimed second place with 31 points, while Bulacan Agricultural State College (BASC) rounded out the top three with a commendable 30 points, followed by Palawan State University (PSU), scored 29 points and Benguet State University (BSU), scored 28 points.

In an interview, John Michael Tarnayo and Frederick Abanes, from the victorious DMMSU team, expressed their gratitude for the win, stating, “We are thrilled to have come out on top, especially knowing we were up against such strong competitors.” With the other 22 institutions that they are against, it was a nerve-wracking moment for them, but they fought for it, bagging the number one spot in the Biology Quiz Bowl.

They shared insights into their preparation, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and the invaluable guidance from their coach. “We created study materials and practice quizzes to help us get ready,” they noted. The pressure did hit them, but despite that, with proper time management and their increased efforts in reviewing, they made it possible.

Looking ahead, the DMMSU team expressed their eagerness to participate more in future competitions, driven by a desire to deepen their understanding of biology. As a message, they encouraged their fellow biology students to embrace continuous learning, stating, “There is so much more to discover, even beyond the classroom.” Aside from the wonders that science offers, there is so much more to discover and explore about the natural world and the biological world.
