DMNS enhances educators’ action research skills through extension activities
The Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (DMNS) of the College of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with the University Extension Office of the University of Northern Philippines, successfully carried out a series of extension activities to improve educators’ action research capabilities.
The event, themed, “Transforming Pedagogy: Enhancing Educators’ Action Research Capability for Culturally Responsive and Gender Inclusive Learning Environments,” was held on November 6, 13, and 20, 2024, at Vigan National High School East (VNHSE) in Nagsangalan, Vigan City.
The activity aimed to provide public-school teachers with the skills required to carry out action research, a reflective strategy that allows teachers to systematically evaluate and improve their educational methods. The goal was to develop learning settings that are culturally responsive and inclusive, meeting the diverse requirements of students.
It was conducted on three consecutive Wednesdays in November, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, at Vigan National High School East (VNHSE). It also featured lectures on various aspects of action research, such as situation analysis, problem identification, literature review, research design, data analysis, and proper referencing.
The extension activity enabled educators to critically evaluate and adapt their teaching strategies, ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, is valued and given equal opportunities to succeed.
The activity was spearheaded by Dr. Restituto Llagas Jr., Prof. Digna Jacob, Prof. Jenny Grace Almazan, and Dr. Tirso Tactay, alongside other faculty members, Mrs. Christa Jesusa Naval, Dr. Alma Segismundo, Dr. Mary Loreen Cayabyab, Mr. Mhark Jay Benitez, and Dr. Dennese Jane Meresen,
The “Transforming Pedagogy” activity marks a significant step toward creating a more inclusive and equitable educational environment in Vigan City. By enhancing educators’ action research skills, the program contributes to the broader goal of achieving quality education for all.
