Ecoconscious responsibility stressed in World Earth Month seminar

Cultivating ecoconscious responsibility was the highlight of a seminar spearheaded by the UNP Biology Society (BioSoc) as part of the World Earth Day Celebration at the Tadena Hall on May 2, 2024.

The said seminar zeroed in on the theme “Cultivating harmony in diversity, and eco-conscious responsibility in conserving ecosystem and building a plastic-free planet.”

BioSoc is an accredited organization of Bachelor of Science in Biology students at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS)

In his opening remarks, Prof. Chris Paul Pagaoa highlighted the importance of the event. He said: “World Earth Day is not only a time for celebration but also a call to action, reminding us of the urgent need to address pressing environmental challenges and embrace sustainable practices in every aspect of our lives. Environmental stewardship is paramount.”

In addition, Prof. Anna Liza Europa-Morales, director of the University Environmental and Management Office (UEMO), emphasized the importance of biodiversity for animals and humans and encouraged Biology students to participate in protecting the environment.

Moreover, the second part of the lecture was delivered by Mr. Ramil Somera from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–City Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-CENRO). He noted: “We can turn the tide on plastic pollution and ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more vibrant planet for all.”

The BioSoc is also proud that during the seminar, the organization did not use single use plastic for food packaging and drinks. This initiative supports the advocacy of the University of not using single-use plastics inside the campus.

This initiative supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely: 4 (Quality Education), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), 15 (Life on Land), and 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
