The University of Northern Philippines honored its devoted workforce during the Service Awards Ceremonies held on October 14, 2025, at Marcos Hall. The event recognized employees who have rendered years of dedicated service and unwavering commitment to the institution—celebrating their loyalty, hard work, and invaluable contributions that have strengthened the university’s legacy and upheld its core values.
The awards presented included distinctions for length of service, civil service, and outstanding personnel performance. Special recognition was also given to offices and individuals who made exceptional contributions to the University’s success in the 2025 international ranking of Higher Education Institutions.
UNP President Dr. Erwin F. Cadorna in his message during the ceremony, lauded the dedication and loyalty of the University’s employees, describing them as the pillars of UNP’s enduring success.
“We gather not only to pay tribute to the University’s legacy, but also to recognize the men and women who have contributed to its success,” Dr. Cadorna said. “Our faculty and administrative personnel, whose years of service have become the true reasons that ushered this University to its rightful place.”
He emphasized that the Service Awards stand as a testament to the recipients’ exemplary work ethic and unwavering commitment to education, research, and public service.
“Each of you has been a consistent beacon, continuously illuminating our dedication to change lives through education, research, and public service,” he added. “During this Diamond Jubilee year, let us be reminded that diamonds are created under intense pressure, and so is perfection.”
Dr. Cadorna further commended the awardees for embodying the University’s core values of quality, integrity, and compassion—principles that, he said, have sustained UNP through decades of transformation and adversity. He urged them to persist in serving with fervor and to continue inspiring others to uphold the legacy of service and excellence that defines the university.
In his keynote message of the Guest of Honor and Speaker Dr. Dexter Buted, Chief Executive Officer and Administrator of the Philippine Coconut Authority, he inspired the University of Northern Philippines community with a profound reflection on leadership, service, and resilience.
“Being part of this prestigious University is never easy for teachers. Every day, you face countless challenges — striving, imagining, and redesigning your mission. You, our service awardees, who have devoted ten, twenty, or even thirty years of your lives, are the very essence of this institution’s integrity,” Dr. Buted remarked, lauding the honorees’ unwavering dedication.
Drawing on the diamond as a metaphor for UNP’s 60th year celebration, Dr. Buted reflected, “By extraordinary heat and pressure, and over time, carbon becomes a diamond. Perhaps this is the real lesson for all of us today — that our true worth as educators and public servants is not measured by brilliance, but by integrity and steadfastness under pressure.”
He went on to emphasize the value of transformational leadership, urging everyone to lead with courage, compassion, and moral conviction. “The cost of leadership is high, especially in institutions where patronage politics runs deep. But if you have the will and courage to change what needs changing, the price you pay is always worth it,” he shared, recalling his own challenges and reforms as former university president.
The speaker also underscored the concept of “anti-fragility,” likening UNP’s resilience to the coconut tree — flexible yet enduring. “When the storm hits hardest, the coconut tree bends, rebuilds, and grows stronger. That is what UNP has done — rising from every challenge, turning adversity into innovation,” he said.
Dr. Buted underscored the essence of true leadership, defining it as an act of compassion and understanding. “Leadership truly means compassion. Ang tunay na lider ay mapagkalinga—marunong umunawa hindi lamang sa kanyang mga kakampi kundi pati na rin sa kanyang mga kritiko,” he said. He encouraged everyone to “treat critics not as enemies but as best friends,” emphasizing that constructive criticism can foster personal and institutional growth. He also reflected on the importance of kindness and moral integrity in leadership, saying, “In a time when politics often overshadows compassion, our greatest rebellion is to remain kind. Be kind always, no matter what.” He added, “When many chase influence, our greatest leadership is humanity. When truth is bent, our greatest act is courage.”
He accentuated the vital yet often unseen role of the University’s non-teaching personnel. He described them as the “silent engines that keep the institution running,” emphasizing that their diligence and commitment form the backbone of daily university operations. Further, he reminded everyone that true success is not measured by the number of awards one receives, saying, “Hindi nasusukat ang tagumpay sa bilang ng parangal.” He explained that genuine achievement lies in one’s dedication, integrity, and the lasting impact of their service to the institution and its community.
Dr. Buted concluded his message by urging everyone to lead with gratitude and righteousness. “Gratitude for the chance to still do good. Lagi’t laging piliin ang gumawa ng tama. Every time we make a decision, isa lang po ang pamantayan natin—do what is right.” He reminded the awardees to find meaning in service and compassion: “Success will only come naturally to those who strive for excellence in every task. Remember, you are being recognized not just for what you have done, but for who you are — resilient yet humble, strong yet kind, excellent yet gracious. Find your joy in service and let that joy guide every step of your journey.”
In the welcome message of Dr. Rolando Navarro, Vice President for Academic Affairs, he highlighted the significance of honoring the University’s dedicated personnel who have continually upheld excellence and integrity in public service.
“Each awardee represents the heart and soul of our mission. They have gone beyond their duties to ensure that our goals are met with sincerity, professionalism, and purpose,” Dr. Navarro said. “Their journey is a living testament that genuine service is not merely measured in years but in the positive impact they have made on others and on the community we serve.”
He further emphasized that the Service Awards Ceremony serves not only as a moment of recognition but also as an inspiration for all to continue serving with integrity, compassion, and excellence.
Delivering the message of gratitude on behalf of the service awardees was Dr. Edelyn Cadorna, who expressed heartfelt appreciation for the recognition given to the University’s dedicated employees. In her response, she conveyed the collective pride and gratitude of the honorees, emphasizing that the acknowledgment serves as both a reward for years of hard work and a motivation to continue serving the University of Northern Philippines with excellence and integrity.
