“Grow with GAD”: UNP promotes gender sensitivity and safe campus culture

In line with the celebration of National Women’s Month, students from Grades 7 to 12 of the University of Northern Philippines Laboratory Schools participated in “Grow with GAD: An Orientation on Gender Boundaries and Safe Space Policies” on March 6, 2026 at the College of Technology Function Hall, equipping learners with essential insights on gender sensitivity, respect for personal boundaries, and the importance of fostering safe and inclusive spaces within the academic community.

The activity aimed to raise awareness among students about gender equality, respectful relationships, and the importance of safe and inclusive spaces within the school community. The orientation also sought to equip learners with knowledge of gender-related concepts and the university’s policies that promote respect and protection for all members of the academic community.

Dr. Aurelia Vitamog, Principal of the College of Teacher Education Laboratory Schools, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the significance of educating young learners about gender sensitivity and responsible behavior. She stressed that fostering awareness of gender boundaries and familiarizing students with institutional policies are essential steps in creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment for all members of the school community. Dr. Vitamog further encouraged students to actively practice respect, empathy, and accountability in their daily interactions, reinforcing the role of education in promoting equality and mutual understanding.

The orientation featured two resource speakers from the Center for Gender and Development (CGAD), who provided students with valuable insights on gender awareness and responsible social behavior. Ms. Renee Grace Tungpalan, Research Coordinator of the Center for Gender and Development, led a discussion on the Basic GAD Concepts and Principles. During her session, she introduced students to key ideas surrounding gender equality, gender roles, and respect for diversity, while emphasizing the importance of recognizing personal boundaries and promoting a culture of mutual respect within the school community. Her discussion helped learners better understand how gender sensitivity contributes to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for everyone.

Atty. Katrynn Louise Eder, CGAD Director, also discussed the University of Northern Philippines’ Safe Spaces policies, highlighting the institution’s strong commitment to safeguard members of the academic community from gender-based harassment and discrimination. During her presentation, she explained the key provisions of the policy and how these measures help create a secure, inclusive, and respectful environment for students, faculty, and staff. She likewise urged the students to remain informed about their rights and responsibilities, emphasizing that awareness and mutual respect are essential in fostering a school community where everyone feels protected and valued.

To further reinforce the message of the activity, the students collectively recited a pledge to uphold gender equality, affirming their commitment to respect, fairness, and inclusivity within the school community. The pledge was led by the Laboratory Schools Student Governor Kevin Dagondon, which highlighted the role of young learners as partners in promoting gender sensitivity and maintaining safe spaces within the campus.

The activity forms part of the university’s initiatives for National Women’s Month, which aims to promote gender awareness, empower individuals, and strengthen the culture of respect and equality within the academic community. Through activities such as the GAD orientation, the University continues to nurture socially responsible students who are informed about gender issues and committed to uphold safe and inclusive spaces in school and beyond.
