Ideas That Matter: DLH Faculty Lead Community-Centered Research Forum

The Department of Languages and Humanities of the College of Arts and Sciences, together with the University Research and Development Office, brought academic research into the heart of the community through a Research Dissemination Program held on September 12, 2025, at Balaleng Elementary School in Bantay, Ilocos Sur. The initiative opened a platform for faculty researchers, local officials, and residents to engage in meaningful dialogue on pressing social issues, explored through the lens of scholarly inquiry.

The program featured diverse array of studies, each rooted in the region’s cultural, psychological, and governance landscapes. Highlights included research on Women in the Pottery Industry, Psycholinguistic Factors in Epilepsy Patients, and the Development of a Written Art Appreciation. Other notable presentations examined the linguistic heritage of Ilocano furniture-making and the local implementation of the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children (Anti-VAWC) law.

Dr. Esperanza Marites Mariñas, the lead organizer, emphasized the importance of translating research into actionable insights that directly benefit communities.

The initiative embodies the University of Northern Philippines’ dedication to fostering scholarship that responds to community needs and champions inclusive growth. By turning academic research into actionable strategies, the program highlights the university’s unwavering support for civic involvement, cultural heritage, and the upliftment of underserved groups. It stands as a testament to UNP’s broader vision of driving regional progress through transformative education and research.
