In an effort to support struggling students in Mathematics, the Master of Arts in Mathematics Education (MAME) and the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) programs conducted a Numeracy Skills Training at Puro National High School on March 21, 2025. The initiative aimed to help Grades 7 to 9 students improve their understanding of essential mathematical concepts.
As part of the Mathematics Literacy for Gainful Activities for Young and All (MaLiGAYA) Project, the training focused on strengthening students’ grasp of fundamental math skills. Selected students from the MAME and BSEd programs served as tutors, assisting learners with topics such as basic operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, and elementary Algebra.
Before the sessions, tutors participated in a short preparation program to identify key areas where students needed help and to develop strategies for effective teaching. The peer-assisted approach benefited both groups, helping struggling students gain confidence while giving tutors hands-on teaching experience.
Discussions are underway to expand the program to other subjects and grade levels.
