GCS, IOS conducts orientation for new students

The University Guidance and Counseling Services (GCS) and Information and Orientation Services (IOS) hosted an orientation for new students at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) Gymnasium on August 20, 2024.

Dr. Erwin Cadorna, University President, delivered an inspirational message to students, wherein he emphasized that as they grow, they should step outside their comfort zone for them to explore new ideas, discover their passions, and develop as individuals.

Dr. Cadorna assured students that the University is committed to providing a world-class education that will challenge and inspire students. Also, the faculties are leaders in their fields and dedicated to helping students reach their full potential.

“You are all here because you have big dreams—dreams of academic success, future careers, and making your mark on the world. And I’m here to tell you that those dreams are within your reach. Reaching your dreams requires sacrifice, though. Practice life-study balance, dream big, study well, and never give up,” Dr. Cadorna said.

Students were also encouraged by the President to practice the CLAY GO habit to maintain a clean and sustainable university.

The activity focused on addressing important information that freshmen, Grade 7, and Grade 11 students should expect as they enter the University. The University Information Office, headed by Dr. Irene Abigail Guerrero, prepared a video presentation on UNP history, University Development Goals anchored on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the University vision and mission, UNP quality policy, and core values.

The University’s top officials were also introduced. Ms. Laarnie Roque of the Office of the Registrar also shared to the students the enrolment processes as well as procedures for shifting, dropping subjects, and maintaining their grades.

Mr. Nelson Benzon of the Office of Student Affairs and Services introduced the services offered by the office, as well as the personnel. “The Office of Student Affairs and Services is ready to cater to what students need in their academic journey,” Benzon added.

The University Security reminded the students that they should follow the University security policy and follow the rules and regulations inside the University, such as proper parking of vehicles and proper attire of students as they enter the campus.

Dr. Daune Alden Oandasan, University Physician, presented the services offered by the University Clinic, like free medical consultations for students and personnel. The UNP Hospital also presented their services for the UNP community and residents of Ilocos Sur, wherein they also offer a 15% discount for students and personnel.

The University Legal Office reminded all the new students about data privacy, specifically Republic Act 10173, the Data Privacy Act of 2012. Atty. Christian Philip Chan discusses the provisions of the law as well as the consequences of violations.

Lastly, to elevate the atmosphere, the UNP Band performed electrifying songs. The OSAS personnel also rendered a dance number.
