UNP, CHR collab in an orientation on human rights

The University of Northern Philippines Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension collaborated with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in conducting a seminar on human rights and other laws in San Sebastian National High School (SBNHS), San Sebastian San Vicente, Ilocos Sur on May 13, 2024. The orientation was attended by senior high school students and class officers.

The lecture on basic human rights was delivered by Mr. Danilo Balino, CHR information officer and head for promotion and advocacy. Atty. Mhelanie William discussed Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE), Anti Sexual Harassment Act (RA 7877), and Safe Spaces Act or Anti-Bastos Law (RA 11313).

Mr. Balino’s lecture aimed to raise awareness and understanding on the fundamental rights and freedoms of every human being, regardless of race, color, sex, language, religion, and political status. He stressed the importance of respecting, protecting, and fulfilling human rights.

On the other hand, Atty. Williams emphasized that the SOGIE, Anti-Sexual Harassment, and Anti-Bastos laws are essential to the youth for them to show respect to everyone. She also discussed the consequences of violations of these laws. These topics she discussed are crucial in promoting inclusivity, preespeciallysment, and creating safe environments for everyone, especially to senior high school students because they are prone to these scenarios.

Also present during the lecture were Ms. Rosario Bernadina Aromin (CHR training specialist), Dr. Fatima Rocamora (UNP VP for Research and Extension), and Prof. May Evelia Ruadap and Ms. Claudette Rabago (university extensionists).

The head teacher of SSNHS is Ms. Naty Rodiris.

The orientation supports Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
