Project DUR-AS continues to nurture young readers in Vigan on its third year

Faculty members and students of the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) program from the University of Northern Philippines – College of Teacher Education (CTE) strengthened their commitment to community literacy through Project DUR-AS (Dagiti Ubbing Raemenda ti Adal ken Siensia) held on October 17, 2025, at Salindeg-Pong-ol Barraca Elementary School in Vigan City. The outreach initiative aimed to foster a love for learning and science among young learners while providing future educators with meaningful hands-on teaching experiences.

Now in its third year of implementation, the project continues to advance its mission of enhancing the reading proficiency of elementary pupils through focused and structured literacy instruction. During its latest session, a reading pre-assessment was conducted for Grade 1 learners to evaluate their foundational skills, while ongoing literacy lessons were provided for Grades 2 to 6. A total of 43 pupils identified as needing additional reading support participated in the activity, reflecting the project’s sustained commitment to nurture literacy development among young learners.

Spearheaded by the CTE Extension Unit, Project DUR-AS continues to serve as a vital initiative that extends the college’s instructional expertise beyond the university’s boundaries. The program reflects the College of Teacher Education’s enduring commitment to advancing basic education through targeted literacy support and innovative teaching interventions for learners in nearby communities. Actively participating in the outreach were faculty members Dr. Fely de Guzman, Dr. Necy Cesaria Romo, Dr. Rainalda Rambuyon, Dr. Wendelyn Talbo, Dr. Glenda Rabanal, Dr. Alma Josefina Bobita, and Dr. Eleuteria Pacpaco, who collectively contributed their expertise in guiding and mentoring young readers.

The activity further strengthened the partnership between the University of Northern Philippines and Salindeg-Pong-ol Barraca Elementary School, where the college has consistently implemented its reading outreach programs. Over the years, these initiatives have become a regular component of the school’s literacy support efforts, providing continuous assistance to young learners in building essential reading and comprehension skills.
