"Sayaw Kultura" revives Filipino folk dances and heritage

The Sayaw Kultura project launched on March 14, 2025 brought Filipino folk dances to life, promoting cultural appreciation and strengthening community ties. The initiative was led by students and faculty from the Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) and Master of Arts in Teaching Physical Education (MAT-PE) programs, in collaboration with the University Extension Office and the College of Teacher Education.

The project featured interactive workshops designed to teach fundamental dance positions, basic steps, and choreography. Participants—including local leaders, women’s organizations, students, and teachers—immersed in learning the Pasikat na Baso, a traditional Ilocano folk dance known for its intricate balancing movements. Over multiple sessions, participants refined their skills, focusing on rhythm synchronization, teamwork, and cultural authenticity through costume integration.

A follow-up assessment on March 20, 2025, showed significant improvement in dance techniques and a deeper appreciation for Filipino heritage. While some participants faced challenges with complex movements and time constraints, their dedication to preserving folk dance remained strong. Many expressed plans to incorporate traditional dances into future community activities.

The project reaffirmed the importance of cultural preservation. Organizers are now exploring sustained collaborations with local institutions to ensure that Filipino folk dances continue to thrive for future generations.
