The Student Welfare Services Office (SWSO) and the Guidance and Counseling Services (GCS) held the Panangtubay Serye Peer Facilitators Training on March 27, 2025, at the Guestel. The event focused on helping students develop the skills needed to support their classmates, peers, and friends—as well as themselves—both academically and personally.
Dr. Marifel Acena, Head of SWSO, welcomed the participants and emphasized how peer facilitators can be effective in the lives of their classmates. Dr. Mariano Paterno Avila, Director of the Office of Student Affairs and Services, followed with an inspirational message, encouraging students to be dependable and understanding friends to those who need guidance. Throughout the event, different speakers shared their knowledge and experiences. Ms. Rowena Mamuad, Peer Facilitators Club Adviser, explained the basics of peer facilitation and how problem-solving is an important part of helping others. Ms. Charlene Calbero, Guidance Counselor of the College of Social Work, talked about ways to provide emotional support. Ms. Precious Emerald Castillo, Guidance Counselor of the College of Teacher Education, discussed how effective communication and empathy can help in peer support.
The training was not just about listening, it also included activities where students practiced active listening and problem-solving. These exercises helped them prepare for real situations where a friend or classmate might need their support.
To close the event, Dr. Rodel Rosario, Assistant Head of GCS, reminded students that being there for others, even in small ways, can have a significant impact. He emphasized three key values: love, share, and invite—encouraging students to show kindness, offer support, and create a welcoming space for those in need.
At the end of the training, the participants left with a better understanding of how they can help their peers. The event was hosted by Peer Facilitators, Ms. Krizza Mae Oreal and Mr. Jojimar Mengullo, who kept the program flowing smoothly throughout the day.
