Three offices promote gender, development in Cabugao
The Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences joined hands with the Center for Gender and Development and the University Extension Office to promote gender equity and empowerment at Daclapan Elementary School in Brgy. Daclapan, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur.
The event was dubbed “Redefining Boundaries: Gender Roles in Mathematics and Sciences and Understanding the Basics of Gender and Development” and brought together educators, learners, and parents to reexamine gender dynamics in education and society.
The program featured three lectures. Mr. Mhark Jay Benitez opened the talks with “Redefining Gender Roles in Mathematics: Encouraging Female Participation and Challenging Stereotypes.” He addressed persistent biases and advocated for the inclusion of women in mathematical fields.
Mr. Rhommel Aninag followed with the topic “Transforming Gender Norms in the Sciences: Promoting Equal Opportunities and Access for Women and Girls.” He emphasized the critical need to dismantle systemic barriers that hinder female representation in the sciences.
Dr. Mae Oliva Piano concluded the series with “Understanding the Basics of Gender and Development,” providing a comprehensive framework to guide participants in championing gender-sensitive initiatives.
This event forms part of the national 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW), a concerted effort to eradicate gender-based violence and cultivate gender equality. Further amplifying its impact, the program aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 5 (Gender Equality), and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities). These objectives underscore the importance of addressing educational and societal disparities to achieve sustainable progress.
Mr. Gilbert Asuncion, head teacher of Daclapan Elementary School, lauded the initiative, emphasizing its significance in empowering the school community to challenge traditional gender norms and advocate for inclusivity. He expressed gratitude for the collaboration, which seamlessly blended academic expertise with social advocacy to create meaningful change.
