The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of Universitas Mulawarman, in collaboration with the University of Northern Philippines (UNP), successfully hosted the International Webinar Series 2 on October 20, 2025, highlighting the theme “Developing Literacy in the Elementary Grades.” The event brought together educators, professors, and Bachelor of Elementary Education students from both institutions—featuring on-site participants from Universitas Mulawarman and third and fourth-year UNP students who joined virtually to exchange insights on advancing literacy education at the elementary level.
The program commenced with an invocation jointly led by representatives from Universitas Mulawarman and Dr. Alma Josefina Bobita of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP), setting a solemn and collaborative tone for the event. This was followed by welcome messages from Dr. Ma. Teresa Susan Manzano, Dean of the College of Teacher Education at UNP, and Prof. Dr. Susilo, Dean of FKIP Mulawarman. Both deans underscored the shared commitment of their institutions to nurture globally competent educators equipped with strong foundations in literacy and lifelong learning.
Dr. Rainalda Rambuyon served as the first moderator of the session, introducing the opening set of speakers. The discussions began with Dr. Eleuteria Pacpaco, who presented the topic “Starting the Literacy Program: Laying the Foundation and Initiating Literacy in Elementary Grades.” In her talk, Dr. Pacpaco highlighted the importance of establishing a solid literacy foundation in the early years, emphasizing that early reading and writing skills are vital stepping stones for lifelong learning and academic success.
Dr. Fely De Guzman followed with her presentation titled “Preparation and Administration of Reading Materials: From Page to Practice.” She emphasized the significance of designing and organizing effective reading resources that foster engagement and enhance learners’ comprehension. Completing the first set of discussions, Dr. Rainalda Rambuyon presented “Measuring Growth: Evaluating Literacy Programs for Young Learners,” which emphasized the vital role of assessment in tracking literacy development and refining instructional strategies based on evaluation outcomes.
Participants from Universitas Mulawarman actively engaged in the discussion, posing thoughtful questions and sharing valuable insights following the presentations. To sustain the interactive spirit of the event, a short quiz activity was held, with tokens awarded to the on-site winners.
The second half of the webinar was facilitated by Ms. Uswatul Hasanah Umar, who skillfully introduced the next set of speakers. Ms. Febry Maghifirah opened the session with her presentation on “Developing Holistic Literacy in Early Childhood.” She was followed by Dr. Khunsul Khotimah, who tackled “Literacy at the Elementary Grade in Indonesia: An Educational Policy Perspective,” offering a glimpse into national initiatives supporting literacy growth. Concluding the session, Dr. Maria Theodora P’ng presented “Bridging Research and Practice: Advancing Early Literacy Through Evidence-Based Instructions,” highlighting the importance of research-driven teaching strategies.
The event culminated in a virtual photo session featuring participants from both universities using the official background — a symbolic gesture celebrating the continuing academic collaboration between the University of Northern Philippines and FKIP Universitas Mulawarman.
