The University of Northern Philippines once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to community service and educational advancement through an extension activity held at Dr. Ricardo Gacula Memorial National High School (DRGMNHS) in Tamurong Primero, Candon City on November 4, 2025.
Dubbed as “Education in Motion: UNP’s Extension Program and Learning Support to DRGMNHS,” the activity brought together university experts, faculty members, and support staff who shared their time and knowledge to enrich the academic and personal development of students and teachers alike. The program served as part of UNP’s continuing efforts to extend the university’s resources to partner institutions across the region.
Dr. Annalyn Galanto, Principal of Dr. Ricardo Gacula Memorial National High School, expressed her gratitude to the University of Northern Philippines for bringing meaningful learning opportunities to their students. She acknowledged that the activities conducted under the extension program contribute greatly to the learners’ holistic development, enriching not only their academic knowledge but also their personal growth and life skills.
In his lecture on Journalism, Mr. Johnny Allagadan Jr. of the University Information Office guided students through the fundamentals of campus journalism, emphasizing the importance of truth, accuracy, and ethical reporting. He also highlighted how the student press continues to evolve as a vital platform for promoting transparency, critical thinking, and civic engagement among the youth.
The University Library Services team, composed of Ms. Marieglo Presto, Ms. Shiela Joy Moreno, Mr. Csarwin Tolentino, Ms. Chrissa Mae Tabula, and Ms. Marissa Rayray, facilitated literacy activities that encouraged reading appreciation and enhanced comprehension skills. Their sessions highlighted how reading and information literacy can empower students to become independent learners and lifelong readers.
On the aspect of student well-being, Dr. Marifel Acena, Dr. Christian Gea Florentino, and Ms. Rowena Mamuad conducted Guidance Counseling sessions that focused on self-awareness, emotional resilience, and building positive relationships. The discussions aimed to help students cope with academic and personal challenges while fostering a supportive school environment.
To strengthen science education, Ms. Jenny Grace Almazan, Ms. Roselyn Rabanzo, Mr. Rhommel Aninag, Mr. Jonnel Torres, Mr. Adonis Roman Pablico, and Mr. Glicerio Savella led the Inventory and Demonstration of Available Apparatus for Physics and Biology. Through hands-on demonstrations, they helped teachers and students better understand the use of laboratory tools and equipment for classroom experiments.
In another key segment, Dr. Charo Rojas, Dr. Jill Ann Paranada, and Mr. Jeem Carlo Pula facilitated a Training on Science Investigatory Project to guide students in conceptualizing, designing, and presenting research projects. The training aimed to enhance scientific inquiry and innovation among learners, preparing them for research competitions and higher-level studies.
The activity formed part of the elebration marking the 6th anniversary of the presidency of Dr. Erwin Cadorna. It was spearheaded by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension, headed by Dr. Fatima Rocamora, with the coordination by Prof. May Evelia Ruadap, University Extension Coordinator.
The initiative reflects UNP’s mission to make education dynamic, inclusive, and community-centered. Through programs like Education in Motion, the spirit of learning is directly brought to the communities served – education that moves, connects, and empowers.
The partnership between UNP and DRGMNHS underscores the University’s continuing pursuit of excellence beyond campus walls—transforming education into a shared endeavor that nurtures knowledge, skills, and values among students, teachers, and local communities.
