The University of Northern Philippines College of Architecture and Built Environment (UNP – CArBE) welcomed Bachelor of Science in Architecture students from Samar State University (SSU) on January 16, 2026, for an academic visit aimed at deepening their understanding of conservation principles and built heritage management.
Held at Tadena Hall in the UNP Administration Building, the activity featured a heritage conservation lecture series led by Architect Christian Nico Pilotin, a heritage specialist from the Municipal Government of Vigan City, in collaboration with Dr. Fatima Nicetas R. Alonzo, Dean of CArBE. The lectures delved into best-practice guidelines in heritage conservation, highlighting Vigan City’s well-established systems and policies in safeguarding historic structures, streetscapes, and other significant cultural assets. Drawing from Vigan’s experience as a recognized heritage city, the sessions provided participants with practical insights into sustainable conservation approaches that balance preservation, urban development, and community engagement.
The lecture series emphasized how the City of Vigan continues to reinforce heritage protection through robust local policies and coordinated implementation. Speakers detailed the city’s regulatory measures governing alterations within designated heritage zones, efforts to preserve traditional architectural character, and initiatives that actively engage the community in conservation programs. The discussions likewise emphasized the critical role of thorough documentation, adherence to sound conservation ethics, and the application of appropriate and sensitive design interventions when undertaking projects within historic environments, ensuring that development complements rather than compromises Vigan’s cultural legacy.
The program featured in-depth discussions on the architectural heritage of Ilocos and notable historical sites across the region, providing participants with valuable insights into the area’s rich built environment. This was followed by an open forum that encouraged scholarly exchange, the awarding of certificates, and a closing program that formally concluded the activity.
The event was attended by faculty members of the UNP College of Architecture and was coordinated by Ar. Julius U. Artates in support of the visiting students’ academic learning objectives. A total of 102 participants took part in the engagement, comprising students, faculty members, as well as invited guests and partner institutions who contributed to the meaningful academic exchange.
