In a bid to strengthen community well-being and promote mental health, the University of Northern Philippines–College of Nursing spearheaded a Mental Health Awareness and Self-Awareness Training, coupled with a Zumba fitness activity, on November 13, 2025, bringing together barangay officials, Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), and residents of Napo, Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur.
Conducted through the CARE Program’s Project NAPOH: Nurturing and Promoting Optimal Health, the activity sought to equip community members with a stronger understanding of mental well-being, emphasizing emotional resilience and healthier daily habits. The initiative supports the implementation of the Mental Health Act (RA 11036) and reinforces ongoing national efforts to expand mental health awareness and services at the grassroots level.
Throughout the event, community members engaged in a series of insightful lectures led by Prof. Fe Tuzon, Prof. Rizza Abinsay, and Prof. Richmond Cortez, who tackled key discussions on mental and emotional well-being. The sessions emphasized essential strategies for stress management, emotional regulation, and strengthening self-awareness, while also emphasizing the importance of identifying early warning signs of mental distress. Participants were encouraged to share their own experiences and perspectives, nurturing an open and meaningful exchange on how families and communities can provide stronger support for individuals confronting emotional and psychological challenges.
In addition to the lectures, the organizing team led a guided self-awareness exercise that prompted participants to reflect on their emotional well-being, identify personal coping mechanisms, and recognize potential stress triggers. The activity fostered mindfulness and encouraged open conversations on mental health, helping attendees gain a deeper understanding of their thoughts and emotions—an essential step toward building mental resilience.
To cap off the day’s activities and highlight the vital link between physical movement and emotional well-being, participants joined an upbeat Zumba session led by Prof. Aiza Arrojo and Prof. Cathlene De Guzman. Barangay officials, BHWs, and community residents filled the venue with lively energy as they danced their way through routines that promoted stress relief, elevated mood, and strengthened social connection.
The integration of mental health learning sessions, reflective self-awareness exercises, and a community fitness activity showcased a holistic model for health promotion, strongly aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
With the commitment of the UNP–College of Nursing and the enthusiastic involvement of the people of Napo, the initiative significantly enhanced mental health literacy, fostered emotional resilience, and encouraged active, health-conscious lifestyles. The event stands as a testament to the university’s mission of cultivating empowered, wellness-focused communities.
