UNP conducts extension activity on Guidance Interventions for At-Risk Learners

The University of Northern Philippines, through the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension, successfully conducted an extension activity at Dr. Ricardo Gacula Memorial National High School aimed to strengthen the capacity of teachers in guiding and supporting at-risk learners.

Dubbed “Effective Guidance Interventions for At-Risk Learners: Practice Strategies for Schools,” the activity was spearheaded by Prof. May Evelia Ruadap, who led the extension team in close coordination with the school administration. The program formally began with a consultation meeting with the school principal, Dr. Analyn Galanto, to discuss the specific needs and concerns of the institution, particularly in addressing learners’ academic, emotional, and behavioral challenges.

The activity featured informative lectures on “Psychological First Aid” and “Mental Health and Psychosocial Support,” delivered by Ms. Pauline Yanssen Martinez. Her discussions emphasized the importance of early intervention, emotional support, and practical strategies in helping students cope with stress, trauma, and other psychological concerns. The sessions also highlighted the crucial role of teachers in creating a safe and supportive learning environment.

Following the lectures, participants engaged in an interactive workshop designed to enhance their practical skills in handling real-life classroom situations. Teachers were presented with various scenarios involving at-risk learners and were tasked to propose and demonstrate appropriate interventions. This hands-on activity allowed participants to apply theoretical concepts to actual teaching contexts.

The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Froilan Unciano and Mr. Jeffrey Valencia, who guided the participants through reflective discussions, group activities, and collaborative problem-solving exercises. Their facilitation encouraged active participation and the sharing of best practices among teachers.

As an outcome of the initial consultation and needs assessment conducted by the UNP team and the school administrators, both institutions agreed on the importance of strengthening student discipline and values formation. In response, UNP committed to deliver a follow-up activity focused on these areas, further reinforcing its support to Dr. Ricardo Gacula Memorial National High School.

The extension activity reflects UNP’s continuing commitment to community engagement and educational development. By empowering teachers with effective guidance and mental health intervention strategies, the university aims to contribute to the holistic development of learners and promote a more inclusive and nurturing school environment.

Through initiatives such as this, UNP continues to strengthen partnerships with local schools and uphold its mandate of extending academic expertise and social responsibility to the wider community.
