UNP conducts Needs Assessment to Strengthen Livelihood Development

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP), through the Department of Languages and Humanities of the College of Arts and Sciences (DLH-CAS), reinforced its commitment to community empowerment by spearheading a needs assessment on livelihood development for its partner community. This initiative forms part of the university’s extension thrust to deliver responsive and sustainable programs while contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Led by DLH Extension Coordinator Mr. Nolito Ragunjan, with Ms. Bernadeth Canoy serving as organizer, the activity aimed to identify the pressing concerns of the community, particularly in livelihood and economic sustainability, to serve as a basis for future interventions. Prior to its conduct, close coordination with community leaders was undertaken to ensure active participation.

A total of 60 participants joined the activity – 21 males and 39 females. Dr. Julius Caezar T. Rivad welcomed the participants and acknowledged the delegates from UNP and the stakeholders present.

Findings revealed that most households depend on unstable, seasonal income. Participants expressed strong interest in acquiring skills in soap-making, food processing, and small-scale entrepreneurship. They also stressed the need for financial literacy, access to capital, and organizational support to enhance livelihood sustainability.

The results underscored the importance of extension programs focused on skills training, entrepreneurship, and capacity-building. The participants’ enthusiasm reflected their readiness to engage in future initiatives, making the assessment a vital step in shaping sustainable and empowering livelihood programs.

The activity concluded with a coordination and planning session for the succeeding phases of the program, facilitated by Mr. Al C. Benzon, Mr. Kem Eli Pacpaco, and Mr. Benedict Bautista.
