The College of Teacher Education of the University of Northern Philippines continued to expand its community outreach efforts as the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) and Master of Arts in Mathematics Education (MAME) programs successfully conducted the fifth session of the Mathematics Literacy for Gainful Activities for Young and All (MaLiGaYA) Project at Puro National High School on March 5, 2026, strengthening mathematics literacy and practical numeracy skills among participating learners.
The initiative extended meaningful academic support to Grades 7 and 8 students who were experiencing difficulties in mathematics, creating opportunities for them to strengthen their foundational skills and build greater confidence in the subject. Through a combination of collaborative group learning activities and individualized tutoring sessions, the learners received guided instruction in key areas such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and mathematical problem-solving.
The sessions were spearheaded by BSEd major in Mathematics students together with participants from the MAME program, under the supervision and facilitation of faculty members from the College of Teacher Education. Their coordinated efforts fostered an engaging and supportive learning environment where students were encouraged to ask questions, explore solutions, and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
The event aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, promoting SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).
Additionally, Dr. Jamaica V. Garcia, a faculty member of the College of Teacher Education, delivered a lecture-workshop for teachers on “Writing a Research Proposal for Classroom-Based and Action Research.” The session aimed to enhance the participants’ research competencies by equipping them with practical knowledge and strategies in developing well-structured research proposals that address real classroom challenges and contribute to evidence-based teaching practices.
The activity forms part of the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) program’s Securing Future initiative, an extension effort designed to empower partner schools by strengthening teachers’ professional skills and fostering a culture of research and continuous improvement in the teaching-learning process.
