The University of Northern Philippines’ Department of Languages and Humanities (DLH), in partnership with Balaleng Elementary School in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, has launched a targeted reading intervention program aimed at boosting literacy under the Department of Education’s Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) initiative.
The program, conducted on November 7, 13, and 21, 2025, targeted Grade 1–6 pupils identified as non-readers or struggling readers. Through engaging sessions, the initiative aimed to foster a love for reading, enhance comprehension and communication skills, and broaden vocabulary—equipping students with the tools to improve their overall academic performance.
In line with DepEd Memorandum No. 064, s. 2025, the ARAL program aims to implement a nationwide learning intervention designed to help students meet grade-level standards and enhance the overall quality of education. According to the program’s official Operational Plan, its dual mission is to address learning gaps and elevate educational outcomes in the country.
The initiative received an enthusiastic reception from teachers, parents, and students alike, who lauded its role in boosting confidence and reigniting a love for learning. Leading the sessions with creativity and dedication were facilitators Profs. Jocelyn Virtudes, Judy Ann Tadal, Sherwin Forneas, and Ruthie Charmaine Tubon, whose guidance made each activity both engaging and impactful.
The program was spearheaded by Dr. Esperanza Marites Marinas, with the invaluable support of Balaleng Elementary School’s head teacher, Ms. Emilita Arizabal. Her strong leadership ensured seamless coordination and fostered active participation from the entire school community.
Through initiatives like this, the Department of Languages and Humanities (DLH) reaffirms its commitment to promote literacy and community engagement, striving to provide every child with the tools and opportunities necessary for academic success.
