Demonstrating its commitment to transformative public service and the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the University of Northern Philippines successfully implemented two major community extension initiatives in San Julian Norte, Vigan City this July.
Organized by the Department of Languages and Humanities, the dual initiatives combined environmental stewardship with vital health education, promoting a cleaner, safer, and more resilient community.
The outreach initiatives began on July 10, 2026 with the second phase of “Sustaining Communities, Restoring Nature,” reaffirming its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable community development. Under the leadership of Dr. Honorato Patubo and the coordination of Dr. Mae Oliva Piano, the initiative featured a large-scale clean-up drive and tree-planting activity designed to combat environmental degradation and promote responsible waste management. More than an environmental campaign, the program served as a platform for raising ecological awareness, equipping residents with sustainable practices that encourage collective responsibility in protecting and restoring their natural surroundings.
Ten days later, on July 20, 2026, the department launched “Heart of the Community: Basic Life Support for Emergency Preparedness.” The hands-on training session equipped 50 community members with critical, life-saving skills, including CPR, choking response, and first-response emergency care. The program focused on elevating local disaster preparedness and strengthening UNP’s partnership with community organizations.
By integrating environmental conservation with health education, UNP continues to deliver on its mission of excellence and community empowerment. These complementary initiatives reflect the university’s holistic strategy for sustainable development—working alongside local partners to build healthier, greener, and better-prepared communities.
