UNP educators strengthen academic innovation through IM Publication Workshop

The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) in cooperation with the Instruction and Faculty Development Office (IFDO), in partnership with Books Atbp. Publishing Corp., a renowned publishing company, spearhead a two-day training workshop titled “TeachText 2.0: Elevating Instructional Material for Publication” on October 29–30, 2025, at the UNP Technology Complex. This activity aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect their intellectual property, navigate publication processes, and effectively disseminate their instructional materials for broader academic and educational use.

Dr. Rolando Navarro, Vice President for Academic Affairs, in his message, commended the seminar-workshop for its significant contribution to the university’s ongoing efforts to elevate the quality of instruction and learning resources. He stressed that capability-building programs such as this play a vital role in empowering faculty members to produce well-crafted and pedagogically sound instructional materials that meet both national and institutional academic standards. Dr. Navarro further noted that the initiative reflects the University’s commitment to continuous improvement, scholarly innovation, and alignment with its strategic development goals—particularly in strengthening academic excellence, fostering research-informed teaching, and promoting the professional advancement of educators. He encouraged the participants to translate the insights gained from the training into practical outputs that will enrich classroom instruction and enhance students’ learning experiences.

Dr. Luzviminda Relon, Director of IFDO, set the tone for the program by presenting its rationale and statement of purpose. In her address, she emphasized that the activity serves as a strategic platform to strengthen the university’s commitment to academic excellence through the continuous improvement of instructional materials. Dr. Relon encouraged faculty participants representing seventeen colleges to take full advantage of the workshop to enhance their skills in developing, refining, and publishing instructional materials that align with the institution’s quality standards. She further highlighted that producing well-crafted instructional materials not only supports effective teaching and learning but also contributes to the university’s broader mission of promoting innovation, academic integrity, and educational advancement.

The first session, titled “Refine to Shine: Polishing Effective Instructional Materials,” was conducted by Dr. Maria Arlene Disimulacion, Associate Professor at the Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, Far Eastern University Manila. Drawing from her extensive experience in academic publishing, Dr. Disimulacion provided a comprehensive discussion on the essential elements that contribute to high-quality instructional materials. She elaborated on key considerations as well as the various avenues and standards for publication of IMs in both print and digital platforms.

Dr. Disimulacion emphasized the importance of clarity, accuracy, and creativity in developing instructional materials that not only meet institutional standards but also engage learners effectively. Her presentation inspired participants to adopt a more scholarly and systematic approach to IM development, highlighting how well-prepared materials can significantly elevate the teaching and learning experience.

Following her lecture, participants took part in a guided workshop session that allowed them to apply the principles and techniques discussed. Working collaboratively, they refined their drafts, exchanged feedback, and received mentoring from the facilitators. The activity served as a venue for educators to transform theoretical knowledge into practical outputs, reinforcing the seminar’s goal of fostering innovation and excellence in instructional material publication.

The second day of the training workshop is set to delve deeper into the intricacies of academic publishing through two engaging sessions. The first presentation, “From Draft to Impact: Publishing Instructional Materials,” will be delivered by Dr. Disimulacion where she will discuss practical strategies for refining instructional materials—from conceptualization and content enhancement to aligning manuscripts with publication standards—to help educators produce impactful and publication-ready outputs.

Following her session, Ms. Elizabeth Guttieres, Manager of Books Atbp. Publishing Corp., will take the floor with her lecture on “The Publication Process” that will provide participants with a comprehensive overview of the publishing workflow, including editorial evaluation, layout and design, copyright considerations, and distribution strategies. Together, these sessions aim to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to transform their instructional materials into professional publications that can contribute to quality teaching and learning.

The two-day seminar-workshop gathered faculty members from various colleges whose instructional materials had either met the recommendations of internal and external reviewers and received a Certificate of Utilization, or were in the process of refining their outputs based on reviewers’ feedback. The event marks a significant step toward empowering educators to publish and share their innovative teaching resources, ensuring both the protection of their intellectual property and their active contribution to the advancement of academic excellence.
