UNP initiates mangrove reforestation activity

Recognizing that our environment and natural resources are on the line, UNP has always emphasized how critical it is that everyone accept responsibility for environmental issues. Our quality of life, social and economic advancement, as well as the existence and long-term evolution of living things, might all be significantly impacted in the absence of proper and prompt preventive and remedial measures.

With this in mind, the University has implemented a ‘Mangrove Reforestation Activity’ in Cabugao and Sinait, Ilocos Sur to teach students the value of environmental conservation and natural resource management. It has come to light that mangrove forests are invaluable components of marine and coastal ecosystems, essential to the sustainability of the ecosphere, economy, and society. Mangrove trees have rich biodiversity that should be preserved, and they can act as natural barriers against soil erosion.

Initiated on December 7, 2023, the Mangrove Reforestation Activity has been organized in collaboration with the Barangay Officials of the two town’s respective barangays. This was participated in by the Environmental Science students from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Accordingly, the mangroves have 70-80 percent survival rate depending on soil conditions, sea levels, wind force, and ocean currents.
