The University of Northern Philippines (UNP), through its Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (DMNS), marked the 2025 Science Month with a series of activities held from September 5 to 24, carrying the theme “SPATIALYZE: Mapping Heritage, Shaping UNP’s Future.”
The month-long celebration, held in observance of Presidential Proclamation No. 28 which designates September as Science Month, underscored the fusion of cultural heritage with modern geospatial technologies. The event highlighted how science can preserve identity while advancing sustainable development, echoing global priorities on quality education, sustainable communities, climate action, and environmental protection.
A lineup of innovative and interactive activities brought out the creativity and critical thinking of UNPians. The Search for Science Quizzard 2025 challenged participants’ knowledge and problem-solving skills beyond the classroom, while Beyond Borders: The GeoInfographics Challenge turned raw geographic data into engaging visual narratives. Through GeoLens: Capturing UNP’s Stories, students showcased photography that celebrated the university’s landscapes, culture, and community life. Adding flair to the celebration, the TERRA-shion Runway Challenge 2025 promoted sustainability by featuring fashion pieces crafted from recycled materials.
Students, faculty, and judges enthusiastically participated in the various activities, which also underscored the integration of Gender and Development (GAD) principles by fostering inclusivity and equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender or background.
The month-long celebration culminated in awarding ceremonies on September 24, 2025, where outstanding participants were recognized across different competitions. Winners included:

Dr. Restituto M. Llagas Jr., Head of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, emphasized that the celebration went beyond deepening scientific knowledge. He noted that it fostered greater appreciation of how science interweaves with cultural heritage and everyday life. “This year’s theme bridged tradition and innovation, reminding us that progress can go hand in hand with preserving culture,” he remarked.
The University of Northern Philippines, through this month-long observance, likewise reaffirmed its commitment to advance science education, promoting sustainability, and shaping a future that values both heritage and innovation.
