UNP Recommits to Quality: Internal Auditors Reoriented and Empowered

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) reaffirmed its commitment to continuous improvement and institutional excellence with the seminar titled “Recommit to Quality Management System: IQA Team Re-orientation and Internal Audit Schedule Finalization” held on August 8, 2025.

Organized by the Quality Management Office (QMO), the activity serves as preparation for the upcoming Internal Quality Audit (IQA) as part of the University’s continuing compliance with ISO 9001:2015 standards. It brought together both new and experienced Internal Quality Auditors (IQAs) for a day of meaningful learning—aimed at deepening their understanding of audit processes, updating them on recent developments, and reinforcing their vital role in sustaining the university’s Quality Management System (QMS).

The seminar began with an opening message from Dr. Rolando V. Navarro, Vice President for Academic Affairs. He reminded the participants of the essential role internal auditors play in maintaining the University’s credibility. Dr. Navarro encouraged the team to remain proactive and objective, and to ensure that UNP’s systems stay aligned with established standards and institutional goals.

A highlight of the program was the inspirational message delivered by University President Dr. Erwin F. Cadorna, who spoke directly to the heart of the IQA team’s responsibilities. He said: “We are committed to serve so that we will be able to give them the best quality education. Being an internal auditor isn’t just a technical term—it’s a promise to be alert, to learn, and to tell the truth. As auditors, you are now part of a system that protects the integrity of our processes and makes our Quality Management System stronger.

You become the university’s mirror: clear, honest, and [grounded] in care—not to blame, but to guide; not to criticize, but to help.

It could be hard sometimes to follow the road you’re on. There will be documents, systems, and situations that will test your knowledge, judgment, patience, and morals. But I urge you to take on this duty with courage, justice, and pride—because what you do ensures that our university advances forward in a clear, consistent, and credible way.”

This message underscored a deeper truth—that internal auditing at UNP goes beyond technical checks. It’s about serving with honesty, being committed to the University’s mission, and helping ensure continuous growth and integrity across all processes.

Following the opening sessions, the training proper unfolded with a series of discussions. Mr. Robinson Tolio provided a comprehensive refresher on the ISO Framework, revisiting the fundamentals of quality management. Dr. Edmar Paguirigan guided the participants through the proper way to write the Audit Findings Report (AFR), stressing the importance of being accurate, professional, and objective in every audit observation.

Ms. Antonina Lazaro walked the team through the proper filling out of ISO-related forms—highlighting the value of documentation and accuracy. Dr. Necy Cesaria Romo shared insights on the Audit Program, including schedules, audit tools, and individual responsibilities.

Another key part of the training was an overview of ISO 21001:2018, led by Ms. Lilibeth Pizarro and Ms. Regina Tobia. They discussed how this standard focuses on educational organizations and learner-centered quality systems.

Throughout the day, participants actively engaged in discussions, shared their own experiences, and exchanged ideas. This dynamic interaction created a collaborative atmosphere, where even challenges from past audits became learning opportunities for everyone.

During the impressions segment, Dr. Epifania Marlene Purisima, Dr. Matt Joseph Cabanting, and Ms. Mona Briones each expressed their sincere appreciation for the program. They shared how the re-orientation not only refreshed their knowledge, but also reignited their sense of purpose as internal auditors. For them, it served as a reminder of the meaningful work they do in upholding the university’s standards and commitment to quality.

The seminar was formally concluded by Dr. Eva Marie Avila, Director of the Quality Management Office, who thanked all participants for their time and dedication. She emphasized that their role as internal auditors is essential in fostering a culture of quality and transparency within the university.

More than just a training session, the seminar served as a powerful reaffirmation of UNP’s commitment to delivering quality education and responsible governance. With a revitalized team of internal auditors and the QMO leading the way, UNP moves forward—clear, consistent, credible, and committed.
