In a vibrant tribute to National Women’s Month, the University of Northern Philippines showcased its dedication to cultural heritage and gender advocacy as the BEED and BCAED programs, in collaboration with the Center for Gender and Development, successfully hosted the Interclass Bukanegan Competition 2026 on March 25 at Diego Silang Hall.
With the theme “Ti Ilocana ti agdama a panawen” (The Ilocana in the Contemporary Era), students took center stage in the traditional Ilocano poetic debate, Bukanegan, displaying sharp wit, eloquence, and deep cultural pride. The competition highlighted the dynamic roles and voices of Ilocana women today, while reinforcing the importance of preserving indigenous literature for future generations.
A total of four groups competed in the event, with two representatives each from the BEED and BCAED programs.
Participants demonstrated not only their mastery of the Ilocano language but also their critical thinking and creativity in addressing relevant gender and cultural issues.
The panel of judges included Dr. Novelyn Barcena, Dr. Victoria Arce, and Dr. Wendelyn Talbo, who carefully evaluated the performances based on content, delivery, and cultural relevance.
Delivering a message on behalf of Dean Dr. Ma. Teresa Susan Manzano, Assistant Dean Dr. Jenny Lou Taan underscored the significance of the event, noting that it goes beyond honing students’ skills in expression and critical thinking. She emphasized that such activity plays a vital role in preserving cultural heritage while fostering an understanding of the intersections between language, culture, and gender—an essential perspective in today’s rapidly evolving society.
During the program, Dr. Santiago Reolalas, a professor of Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE), underscored the importance of the competition, noting that it not only nurtures students’ appreciation of their linguistic heritage but also promotes a deeper understanding of gender roles in today’s society
The Bachelor of Elementary Education program triumphed as champion following a series of dynamic and thought-provoking competitions. The victorious team, recognized for their skill and collaboration, featured Marvin Pimienta, Yna Irish Ragasa, Bea Rose Castillo, Francine Paz, Cyries Prado, Analyn Garcia, Jovelyn Pagay, Angel Marie Garcia, Karylle Tungpalan, Erich Hambre, Andrei Josh Sajor, Rosario Joy Rosales, Princess Myle Salgado, and Alyssa Nicole Echanes.
