West Philippine Sea Caravan visits Sta. Maria, Candon

On the second day of the West Philippine Sea Caravan, a collaborative team from the University of Northern Philippines–Institute of Environmental Government (UNP-IEG), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Tanggol Kalikasan Inc., and the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur visited the Municipality of Sta. Maria and the City of Candon on August 29, 2024. This visit was part of the West Philippine Sea Caravan, aimed at assessing and enhancing eco-tourism initiatives in the region.

The team first visited the mangrove forest in Brgy. Bia-o, Sta. Maria. Here, they highlighted the planting of over 150,000 mangrove seedlings across 20 hectares, which are being prepared for eco-tourism development.

Following this, the group traveled to Brgy. Darapidap, Candon City to observe the surrounding sea turtle hatchlings. The local government, in partnership with barangay officials, has been actively involved in ensuring the safe return of turtles to their natural habitat until they hatch.

Hon. Eric Singson, Mayor of Candon City, led the team throughout the Candon Eco Park, where they noted the increasing livestock population and the scenic views from its mountain top location, which provided ample space for both animals and plants. The tour also included a visit to the mayor’s retreat house and the Kusina Kabakiran, further emphasizing the area’s commitment to eco-tourism and sustainable practices.

ASEC. Lilian M. de Leon, Assistant Secretary for International Relations, Department of the Interior and Local Government has been actively involved in various initiatives related to local governance and environmental management. Alongside her, Atty. Ma. Ronely D. Bisquera-Sheen, the Managing Director of Tanggol Kalikasan, and Prof. Analiza Europa-Morales, the Coordinator of the University of Northern Philippines–Institute of Environmental Governance (UNP-IEG), have also played significant roles in spearheading assessments and enhancing eco-tourism efforts in the region.

This collaboration reflects a commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation in local communities, particularly in the context of the West Philippine Sea Caravan activities.
