Young Scholars Shine in UNP’s 60th Anniversary Academic Quiz and Spelling Bee

As the University of Northern Philippines celebrates six decades of excellence and innovation, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) spearheaded the Invitational Academic Quiz and Spelling Bee Competition on October 8, 2025, at the UNP Tadena Hall and CTech Function Hall, bringing together bright young minds and uniting young scholars in the spirit of learning and competition under the theme “UNP @ 60: Celebrating a Journey of Growth & Innovation at the Forefront of Global Education.”

Teams representing various schools brought energy and enthusiasm to the competition as they showcased both intellectual depth and linguistic excellence. The Academic Quiz provided a rigorous test of participants’ mastery in a wide range of disciplines—including General Information, Science, Mathematics, and the Humanities—encouraging teamwork, critical thinking, and mental agility. Complementing this was the Spelling Bee, which placed contestants in the spotlight as they demonstrated not only their expansive vocabulary and spelling precision but also their confidence, quick reasoning, and ability to perform under pressure. Together, these events fostered a spirit of healthy competition and academic camaraderie, celebrating the participants’ commitment to learning and scholastic excellence.

University President Dr. Erwin F. Cadorna in his message highlighted the vital role of academic competitions in cultivating students’ critical thinking, confidence, and intellectual curiosity. He emphasized that these activities go beyond testing knowledge—they serve as platforms for students to apply learning, showcase excellence, and build character. Dr. Cadorna further stressed that initiatives like these exemplify the University of Northern Philippines’ unwavering dedication to academic distinction and the holistic development of its learners.

The event culminated in the awarding of winners, serving as a fitting finale to the day’s academic festivities. The moment also stood as a meaningful highlight of UNP’s Diamond Jubilee celebration—a proud reflection of the University’s 60 years of unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and service to the community.

In the Spelling Bee competition, top-performing schools from various levels showcased their linguistic mastery and composure under pressure. For the Elementary Level, Cagayungan Elementary School clinched first place, followed by the University of Northern Philippines in second, and Gov. Evaristo Singson Memorial School in third. At the Secondary Level, Benito Soliven Academy Inc. emerged as champion, with Ilocos Sur National High School and Vigan National High School East securing the second and third spots, respectively. In the College Level, UNP dominated the category, placing first, trailed by Ilocos Sur Community College in second and Data Center College of the Philippines–Vigan City in third.

Meanwhile, in the Academic Quiz Bee, participants demonstrated their breadth of knowledge across disciplines. Nagsangalan Elementary School took the top spot in the Elementary Level, followed by UNP in second and Narvacan Catholic School Inc. in third. For the Secondary Level, Philippine Science High School–Ilocos Campus emerged victorious, with Tagudin National High School and St. Agnes School Inc. finishing second and third, respectively. At the College Level, UNP once again proved its academic prowess by claiming first place, while Data Center College of the Philippines–Vigan and Divine Word College of Vigan secured second and third places.
