UNP ties up with CHR for human rights orientation

 

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension (OVPRE) of the University of Northern Philippines tied up with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) for students’ orientation on human rights. The second leg of the lecture was held at Tay-ac National High School (TNHS), participated in by more than 80 senior high school students on May 14, 2024. The first leg was at San Sebastian National High School held on May 13.

Mr. Danilo Balino, CHR Information Officer and Head for Promotion and Advocacy, delivered the lecture on basic human rights. He focused on the fundamental rights and freedoms of every human being regardless of race, color, sex, language, religion, and political affiliation. Mr. Balino likewise underscored the importance of respecting, protecting, and fulfilling human rights.

Atty. Mhelanie William of Legal Division of CHR talked about Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE), Anti Sexual Harassment Act (RA 7877), and Safe Spaces Act or Anti-Bastos Law (RA 11313). She pointed out that these are essential for the students to be aware as bases of their actions.

Dr. Fatima Rocamora, UNP VPRE, emphasized the importance of establishing a safe environment for everyone while the school principal, Dr. Evangeline Pre, thanked UNP and CHR for the orientation conducted in the school.

Also present during the orientation were Prof. May Evelia Ruadap and Mr. Randall Rabacal, UNP extension coordinators, and Ms. Rosario Bernadina Aromin, CHR training specialist.

The orientation supports Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
